Words Matter: When Language Becomes Art

Mixed Media Workshop with Artist Laura Raborn

In this thought-provoking class, we will study various ways to include language in our compositions. The words can be a background, can create a subtle message, can be used to create a graphic element or pattern, or can become the central element of the artwork. We will look at contemporary artists who use language such as Christopher Wool, Barbara Kruger, Glenn Ligon, and Guy Denning.

Techniques will include arranging and gluing words on the surface to create patterns, handwriting on top of paint layers, carving words into wet paint, stenciling letters on to the surface, partially hiding words with layers of paint or collage, and image transferring newspaper and magazine text, just to name a few.
This class is for all levels though experience with acrylic paint will be helpful.

Saturday and Sunday Feb 8th & 9th 10 am to 4 pm (with a 45 minute lunch break)
